Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are enlarged, often twisted superficial veins caused by failure of venous valves and reflux. Symptoms may include visible veins, aching, heaviness, itching, ankle swelling, skin pigmentation, bleeding or venous ulceration.

When to seek urgent care

Active bleeding from a varicose vein needs immediate medical attention. Do not wait for a routine appointment. A new hard, red, painful vein or sudden one-sided swelling also needs prompt assessment.

Arrange review for persistent aching, heaviness, itching, ankle swelling, skin changes or an ulcer. Duplex findings and your symptoms guide treatment; not every visible vein needs a procedure.

Symptoms and risk factors

Symptoms can include visible bulging veins, aching or heaviness after standing, itching, ankle swelling and changes in skin colour or texture. Family history, pregnancy, increasing age, excess weight and prolonged standing can contribute.

Assessment

A clinical examination and venous duplex ultrasound help identify the pattern and source of reflux, assess the deep venous system and plan treatment. Treatment decisions are based on symptoms, skin changes, ulceration, bleeding, anatomy and patient preference.

Treatment options

Depending on the duplex findings and clinical problem, treatment may include compression, endovenous laser treatment (EVLT/EVLA), radiofrequency ablation, ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, foam sclerotherapy, phlebectomy or combinations of these methods.

The purpose of treatment is to address clinically significant reflux and symptoms; not every visible vein requires a procedure.
