When to seek urgent vascular assessment
Go to the nearest emergency department immediately for a suddenly cold, painful, pale or discoloured limb; severe rapidly worsening infection; major vascular injury; or leg swelling with chest pain, breathlessness or fainting. Do not wait for a phone or WhatsApp response.
New unexplained one-sided leg swelling needs urgent assessment. A new diabetic foot wound also needs prompt review, even when it is not painful.

Veins and leg swelling
- Varicose veins — enlarged veins, aching, heaviness and skin changes.
- Leg swelling — understanding venous, lymphatic and other causes.
Foot wounds and infection
- Diabetic foot — wounds, infection, pressure injury and reduced circulation.
- Non-healing leg and foot wounds — why circulation, pressure, venous disease, diabetes and infection can delay healing.
- Cellulitis — a red, warm, painful leg and when vascular assessment helps.
Other vascular problems
Peripheral arterial disease, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and chronic limb-threatening ischemia need vascular assessment. Acute limb ischemia requires immediate emergency care. Chronic venous disease and non-healing wounds may also need vascular assessment. Other areas include dialysis access, vascular trauma, aneurysms and vascular malformations.
